Except...it was RCA, not Collins, that engineered and performed that conversion, around 1961.

I doubt that it bothered Collins much.  They stayed employed to their capacity producing state-of-the-art sets like the 618T and the AN/ARC-58, just to mention two of many sets that they marketed to the commercial and military market.  The AN/ARC-38 was old and had been out for eight years when it came time to convert some to USB.
