Good Evening All (UTC/GMT),
A question about Mercury and Gemini Space Capsules and their Communications Packages. I recently watched Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff. In it you can see what looks to be an AN/GRC-19? in the scene about Yager's cracking the speed of sound in the X-1 test plane. In watching the movie I and wondered about early communications payloads aboard Mercury and Gemini capsules. I know that they had HF, VHF and UHF systems aboard. I also know that certain communications took place between 4 and 8 Mhz during flights. My question to the group is three-fold:
What communications systems were carried on the flights? (designators, etc., communications training of the "Mercury Seven"?)
Were any of the early American Astronauts Hams, like in later flights?
Was any HAM activities involved in flights during these two programs 1960's?
I can find little on the net to answer these questions. It seems that this group has great historical/institutional memory.
73,
John KB1KRN
