[Milsurplus] AN/GRR-5 Question

My AN/GRR-5 lacks the E-2 neon bulb (49NE) in the 1st RF stage. This bulb is
designed to protect the antenna transformer from an overload. Here are my
questions:

1. Will the presence or absence of this bulb affect the receiver's performance?

2. Assuming I connect the receiver to my outdoor antenna only when I'm using the
set, is there any danger to leaving this bulb out? Put another way, is there any
advantage to putting it in?

By the way, thanks to the help of you kind and patient folks on this list, the work
on my AN/GRR-5 is going along well. Sensitivity is very good and I am duly
impressed with this radio's performance.
