I was looking at some very old CQ magazines in a library yesterday.
One from June 1945 has an interesting picture on the cover. Shows
two GIs in the jungle of New Guinea operating a direction finder
setup. What is curious about it is that the receiver is a BC-348.
Also the direction finder loop is clearly an airplane item. Although
the loop is visible, not inside a streamlined housing, the streamlined
fairing where the assembly attaches to an airplane is clearly
visible. For whatever reason they improvised a ground DF set out of
airplane equipment.
