Ben,

Ray's correct.  The two primary uses for the 2E22 are the BC-1306 and 
son of 1306, the AN/GRC-9.  Both depend on the suppressor being on a 
separate pin for modulation.  Also, the quick-heat filament of the 2E22 
is important.  In AM mode, the filament is cold until you push to talk.  
Would be a good field expedient to get on the air on CW though.
