[Milsurplus] Question about EMP

Floyd:

Some MIL radios and other electronics are protected and some aren't. It
mostly depends on where they're intended to be used. If a radio's not
designed
to survive EMP, there's not a lot you can do to provide proper protection
short of enclosing it in a grounded metal box that forms a good Faraday
cage.
But the antenna will still be a vulnerability path.

What kind of EMP do you want to protect against? There are two kinds:
LEMP - Lightning Electromagnetic Pulse
NEMP - Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse

LEMP isn't really a problem if the radio's at least a kilometer from the
lightning event.
NEMP can be a problem even if the nuclear event is 1/2 way around the world.

I spent a lot of my Lockheed EE career designing EMP protection into
airplanes and
associated electronics. I'll be happy to help you if you can provide more
detailed info
on what gear you want to protect and from what kind of EMP. I'm afraid the
NEMP
won't be piublicly available, though.

Dick

Subject: [Milsurplus] Question about EMP

Are the modern military radios destroyed by EMP or are they protected? I am
not refering to the ionization of the air, but the melting of the germanium
in solid state components.

If they are destroyed how can they be hardened or protected to prevent this?
Is there any kits for this? Are they available?
