Dave,

I'd guess, in that time period, that the screws are probably BA (short for 
British Association), not Metric.  Anything 1/4" diameter or larger is probably 
BW or BSF, except on specialty items like panel bushings maybe, which as in US 
practice might be of finer thread than the diameter would indicate.  And the 
screw heads you're referring to might be Fillester.  

The British didn't finally cave in and start converting to that piss-poor 
French metric system until around 1970, at least in the automotive industry.  
After briefly converting to UNF.  Made working on 60's/70's vintage Land Rovers 
"interesting".  You had to have a full complement of three different sets of 
tools and taps & dies.
