Interestingly enough, Micalex is still being made and used, though it's
not clear to me why GE began using it for the antenna terminal plate in
1937 or thereabouts. Its heat resisting qualities are certainly not
needed in that application, and normal ceramic or even common phenolic
would have been up to the power levels involved. Bendix used phenolic
for the antenna feed-throughs in their TA-2J and other similar output
transmitters and it works fine. Micalex is not difficult to machine,
though carbide cutters are advisable because it *is* pretty abrasive.
