Probably the best evidence is its inclusion in a Navy equipment catalog.
Can't give you the numbers right now, i have just "some pages."
The best argument against the "spy radio" claim is that its rating was
"RESTRICTED", not "CLASSIFIED" or any higher rating. The "purpose"
listed was pretty bland, just "To communicate with similar units". Unlike
the rating of the DAG and MBM.
As i've said before here, my take on this set as well as MBM, is that
they were kinda like the Army's PRC-1, PRC-5, and TRC-10, not
really spy radios either, but special purpose, like behind enemy lines,
sometimes. For the Navy, this means their SACO project helping
China fight Japan.
I am wondering what handcrank genset went with the CMS. If it's
a 300 volt radio, i'm thinking they just used the GN-35 from the Army.
Unlike the Army sets, neither the CMS or MBM will run from AC power.
