The Army and USAF bombers and cargo aircraft that
I know about had their radios and other electronic
equipment configured for use anywhere in the world.
If the pilot had two HF transmitters he could use two
pre-set frequencies, and if he had two HF receivers
he could leave one on the 200 - 400 KHz band for
control towers and radio range navigation, and put
his other HF receiver on which ever HF frequency
his HF transmitters were on, one at a time. When
I worked in Airways Stations in USAF in the 40's,
the tower was on 6440, and the Air Traffic Control
Center was on 4220. The radio operator hung out
on 4495 CW mostly, and monitored other frequencies
as appropriate such as 8280. We mussn't think
everything was arranged for airplanes that regularily
got shot at. Trivia: "Coffee Grinder".
