[Milsurplus] BC-348 rebuild question

Group -
In the BC-348 there are a number of  .5uf 250V capacitors in metal 
cans.  I could just replace them easily with an insulated standoff with 
new  .5uf  500V caps..  But no that's to easy.   I am considering on 
opening up the  cans  gutting the contents and replacing with the  new 
.5uF caps.

Any one ever attempt this?
Were you successful?
What techniques, tools did you employ?

Yes I know that the authenticity of the unit is compromised since I just 
finished recapping the radio with orange drops.
