Note that I said "deep south" houses, Tom.

I don't know where you are in TN, Tom,
but brother lives in Tellico Village.  Some
houses have walk-out basements, others
have walk-in space instead of crawlspace.

Most houses here in central Oklahoma are
slab-built.  Basements are possible, but can
be a problem due to water table and shifting
clay soils.  They are possible, but folks don't
want to spend the money needed to make
them work.  I suspect the same in your area.

Not just the less expensive.  In this part of TN because of either  the rock 
or drainage, it's not possible to build a basement and all  the houses have 
a crawlspace.  There are codes requirements defining  crawlspaces.  They not 
just fo' the po'.
