For the non-southern folks, "crawl space" is what many
less expensive houses built in the deep south have under
the floor.  Foundation top (stem wall) is maybe three feet
(maximum) above ground level.  Generally there is no
need to worry about freezing pipes during winter.
There are vents spaced around the stem wall to allow
ventilation.  In winter, these are covered to hopefully
keep temperatures there above freezing.  The "floor"
of this crawl space is usually just bare dirt.  It's common
for folks to store their "treasures" (read junk) there.
