Hallicrafters Sky Ranger S-39, can you please tell me what this Radio
was used for, was it Military? What date made etc. this is a question
from a friend of mine.can you assist him at all?

The S-39 was introduced right at the beginning of WW2. It replaced the S-29, a similar looking set. It was used as a morale set in the war, and given the designation R-80 according to Dachis. I had one back in the early 1950s as my first shortwave receiver. One shortcoming was you had to have fresh B batteries or operate it on AC and have a hot 1R5 to hear anything above 20 MHz. Apparently it was Hallicrafters attempt to compete with Zenith for a portable short wave receiver, although it has more of a communications receiver look than the entertainment radio look of the Trans-Oceanic.
