Mike Hanz provided the followind sterling points:

I put a little bit more about the "video games" at the bottom of
http://aafradio.org/docs/ , Hue. I scanned part of the 1946 NDRC book
on Guided Missile development before donating it to the NASM archives
last year. I did not post more than the first four pages on the Azon
and Razon because it quickly gets into the mathematical basis for the
design and can make your mind go numb. I can send those pages to anyone
interested.

Many years ago, I was given the task of making a school bus follow the track indicated by a buried wire. I looked up the formulas for steering and guidance and found myself thoroughly numbed as Mike indicates. So, I just designed a limited slew rate motor drive, belted a big servo motor to the steering wheel, and let 'er rip. Worked perfectly. Many guard rail and barrier designs were tested with that old bus and a whole lot of successors. So, you can do it academically, or you can do it practically.
