I'm having some difficulty troubleshooting a BC-342-D that I bought last
week. I could sure use the collective knowledge and experience of this group.
When purchased, the radio worked. I changed out the filter caps and it
worked decently. Now, it has died. The problem is in the audio section. I get no
sound from the speaker when I touch the grid cap of the 1st AF/Detector (6R7).
The radio stopped working suddenly. It resumed working a few minutes later and
then crapped out completely.
The voltages in the 1st and 2nd AF sections are off. The plate and grid
voltages in the 2nd AF are about 350, much higher than the 240 and 260 that is
supposed to be there. Likewise, the plate voltage in the 1st AF is about 350
instead of 250. There is no cathode voltage in either stage.
I replaced the cathode cap in the 2nd AF previously. The cathode resistor
reads correctly (1K with the 2 2K resistors in parallel). I have not yet
replaced the cathode cap in the 1st AF. However, the resistance from cathode to
ground is about 750 ohms, which is the value of the cathode resistor.
The tubes (6R7 and 6F6) test good. To be sure, I subbed known good ones but
it didn't help.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance, guys.
Joe Connor
