Interesting.I did not know that there were earlier stand alone RU's.It seems odd,but maybe not, that all the gear looks to be mid to late '30's vintage yet the "cutaway" article says it's a PBY-5 and the accident that grounded the aircraft was in 1944.One possibility is that all the original gear was removed and sets from the training center, which may have been early or pre- war vintage, then installed.

PS anyone headed to Florida to take a closer look?

Well, I couldn't put my finger on all the differences either without
reference to such manuals as I have. But when I first looked at the photos, something
just didn't look "right".
I was assuming that the RU's were either 18's or 19's because as someone
pointed out to me earlier this week, they each have a different junction box from
the one supplied with GF/RU sets. It has provision for two receivers and no
transmitter. However, I just went digging through the standalone RU manuals that
I have. The earliest is on the RU-5, and it and the RU-11 have the same dual
receiver junction box as the RU-19. So probably the earlier models did as
well. So no clues there as to which model of RU is currently installed.
