That'd be "Rock of the Marne" as in 3rd ID, 
(Mechanized) which earned the nickname in WWI 
when other units nearby retreated and the 3rd ID 
held it's ground against the Germans.

There should be a small and finite list of 
Sargeants Major in the 3rd ID. As they're a still 
established unit, you might be able to get 
someone in the unit to do some digging for old 
Sargeant's Major lists and see whom it could be 
based on the medals and such.
