As a result of the previous thread, and the inability to find any evidence that
the APN-1 was connected to anything else, I got to wondering what the APN-1 was
really used for.
Obviously, it was designed to avoid flying into things when operating at low
altitudes because it measured height over terrain whereas a barometric altimeter
does not, but why? Was it so that missions could be flown in and out at low
altitude to avoid AA and such? Was it for low altitude bombing? I thought the
latter was only done a few times (the Dam Busters, for example)
Anybody know for sure?
