No sir, they did it for traffic flow, the kicker is "cleared for
approach" which let you maintain hi speed until you needed to slow down
to get on the bug numbers.
You would descend to FA altitude and then hold it for speed decay to
first flap bug speed and the start spooling up for final bug as the
speed decayed. The first time I did it was VMC and did I whiz right on
by the outer and making S turns on final to slow down.
The tower says Tango Lima are you having problems and my copilot just
stammered no sir just a little fast runway in sight gear down and in the
green. B-707/320C was the A/C.
