That is not the case, The DC-8 series and DC-10 aircraft are designed to
use the thrust reverses in flight idle position only, but not the
spoilers. The only time we used reverses was when ATC kept us high and
or fast on descent, like maintain 250 BLO 10,000 cleared for approach
then get dirty approaching the outer, Normal descent profile was Mach to
changeover and 320 IAS to the FIR or 10,000 whichever was lower then 250
IAS until cleared or at Approaches request to keep it up or Slo to 180??.
The fun approach was going into Schipol (Amsterdam) was at the FIR North
was maintain 320 to the outer cleared for the approach, get dirty on
scheduled bug speed crossing the outer on final bug calling gear down
and flaps approach intercepting the GS. Rhein-Main was much the same
depending on traffic.
The Boeing aircraft use flight spoilers in the air and reversers on the
ground only when the ground interlock switch opens.
