Reversable pitch props came into play when one had to
stop once on the ground. The brakes could only do so
much, especially on some of the abbreviated airfields
the planes operated from. By reversing the prop pitch
and running up the engines, it was the same as the
thrust reversers on modern jets in function.
Oh, yeah. And if you overshot your turnoff to the
taxiway, you could back up too.
