I think once-upon-a-time there were wind-driven generators, nominally 
800 cycle, which could really wind up.  Transformers are generally 
pretty tolerant of over-frequency operation, as the magnetic induction 
goes down as frequency goes up. (at constant voltage) Core losses are 
higher at higher frequencies, but are mostly offset by the lower induction.
