The well known ARC-21 and ARC-26 sets sat in limbo for seven years while
the
Army and Navy squabbled over details of the specs..

Mike and the group..
That kind of stuff never went away. My friend Doug Dilley WA6VOV designed
an antenna to replace the AS-1729, and got the Government patent through the
Navy Labs. The drive behind the design was producing a low visibility
antenna that had radiation and VSWR specs to match tactical radios but did
not make the command track/anphib vehicle look like a porcupine and a sweet
target for shore gunners. Doug went back to Maxwell etc and came up with a
design that worked on the tracks, was low vis, and tested in Germany for
tactical use as a steerable null array. Everyone liked the antenna and it
cost less than 25% of a 1729 but.....it got hung up for years over the paint
spec.
