Hi, guys,

In a slight departure from the usual subject matter,
however in keeping with the discussion of air
navigation, I've got some questions.

I know the Norden bombsight was tied to the C-1
autopilot. I also know that there was provision in
the APN-1 for connection to an autopilot. Was it also
the C-1 or another flavor ... or did it matter?

Next, what indicator was used with the BC-733
localizer receiver & the ARN-5 glide slope receiver?
Also, were they coupled to an autopilot?

Ah, the prime question is "Where am I going with all
this"? I think I can conjure up the big pieces of a
C-1 (and maybe an A-5, though I'm not sure) autopilot
as well as the major components of a couple different
flux gate compasses. APN-1 components are still
available as are the ILS receivers and most of their
associated parts. The ADF won't be a problem since
I'm sure I can find all the important pieces for an
MN-26, BC-433 and/or ARN-6. Likewise, a marker
receiver won't be a problem though the indicator(s)
may be. On the other hand, I think I'll skip the
Norden for now; at about $1500 a pop for a
questionable one and well over that for one that
stands a chance of working, it's a bit outside my
league for now.

I'm having a bit of a problem with connectors, mounts
and the like (as well as the ILS indicator for the
BC-733/ARN-5 pair) but this is not unique to this
project as those who've built up their own
installations of other types will attest.

The end result wants to be a navigation set as would
be found in larger aircraft. I'm not basing on any
particular model but rather going as generic as I can,
though I readily admit I'm probably taking some
liberties I shouldn't. On the other hand, it'd be
cool to see how it all ties together.

Oh, yes. Any clues where to find manuals on things
like autopilots?

BEst regards,

Michael, K3MXO>>

An often overlooked manual with LOTS of useful info on this stuff is
the RADIO manual for the B 24, part of a four or five volume B 24
manual set seen from time to time on eBay and probably scanned on to a
CD by now. Has connection diagrams for plugs, photos, many schematics,
use instructions etc. Has enough data on SCR 269 (BC 433 ADF) to set up
the system if you have all the parts. There is also a lot of detail
about the autopilot, but I think that may be in a different volume. ARN
6 is the easiest way to go with as it needs only 28 VDC and no external
400 Hz power like the ARN 7 or BC 433 requires.
