I would also suspect VFD's to not work well driving a transformer
with a varying load, but they might as I've not tried. They'll
probably put out a huge amount of RF noise, and the output is not a
nice sine wave. (Heck, I've not even looked at the output of any of
the ones we had at my previous job, stairstep output maybe?)
Inexpensive used ones show up on Ebay from time to time, might be
worth a try if they are in working condition.
