The shipboard use of YE and land use of YG does seems to be reflected in most sources.
I can't find my YG manual right now, but I thought that the YG had the capability of accepting ship heading information, which would imply suitability for shipboard use.
Both the YG and YE are mentioned at the bottom of page 51 in an interesting copy of the USS Yorktown's Commanding Officer's report on the Battle of the Coral Sea found at:
http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ships/logs/CV/cv5-Coral.html
"Due to the disabling of Yorktown's YE antenna and, later,
to the complete loss of communications in Lexington, there
was a period of several hours on May 8, when homing by
means of YE was not available to the air groups.
The delivery of YG homing transmitters to carriers and
cruisers should be expedited."
So, could the YG be used in a shipboard installation as the last sentence seems to imply?
