Anybody know of an available 60 to 400 Hz AC power converter or 12/24
vdc to
120v 400 Hz inverter -- or easy-to-homebrew circuit? Is it feasible to
modify a 12 v to 120 V 60 Hz inverter of the kind sold for use in cars?

Put another way -- what do you guys use to power aircraft type gear
designed
for 115 vac 400 Hz?

Barry

Barry,

There were many hundreds of 12 VDC to 110 VAC 400 hz 350 watt solid
state inverters made for suprlus APN 9 Loran A sets suring the 1960s.
The primary mfrs were Linear Systems and Topaz. None are used today so
there are a lot sitting in junkpiles somewhere. If you put a wanted ad
in Fishermans News (published in Seattle) you'd find a couple. They
retailed for $225 back in the day, but $50 would be a fair price these
days. Output is sqaure wave and frequency varied unit to unit, I saw
380 hz to 430 hz.

There is an absolute bargain 24 VDC to 110 VAC 400 hz solid state
inverter that appears on eBay regularly, mil surplus. They usually go
for about $ 50-65, are capable of 750 watts and are xtal controlled for
precise 400 hz. Modern design using integrated circuits etc.

Mark
