Actually, the extra height ( a 100 feet?) bought little extra range, as the 
range at line-of-sight is determined by the SUM of the heights of the 
transmitter and receiving antennas. An extra 100 feet at 20,000 is not going to make a 
big difference.

The reason for the antenna being above everything else was to avoid pattern 
distortion from reflections...I'd hate to be the pilot searching for my ship 
but being in a null point.

However, the height above water of the YE antenna did negatively impact the 
safety of the ship because it improved the ability of the enemy (subs and 
surface warships) to hear it.
