Re; Delta connected generators

Generators are usually Y connected because a delta connected generator
permits harmonic currents to circulate within the delta connection,
subtracting from VA available to the external load. It is possible to
build a generator which merely circulates current and cannot supply a
load. (yes, it has been done, but not intentionally) Delta connected
generators can be built, but are unusual. The Y connected generator
also provides a convenient (neutral) grounding point. Grounded vs
ungrounded systems is a whole 'nother controversy, and we are getting
too far off topic... (Ungrounded systems are not BAD! At lv, system
transients are well within insulation strength, and an ungrounded system
is more reliable. At hv it's a different story.)
