Navy SOP was to increment the model number with each new order, whether there
were any differences between the equipment supplied on each order, or a
different contractor, or not. The Signal Corps did a little of that but more often
than not didn't. Best example I think is LM followed by TCS followed by
several of the shipboard transmitters.
