"What, if any, changes were made to warrant a new model? There really
isn't a lot to one of these. Nothing jumps out at me other than
perhaps tube compliment or frequency coverage? Looks identical to my
Bendix DU-1 beyond the color of the base mounting plate. The one I
have is black wrinkle, this one looks like bare aluminum or possibly
just dirty. Beyond that, ?

I have no idea if this is applicable here, but a while back I had 
occasion to go through some old Navy DF systems model numbers, and 
different designations were assigned for different installations, 
where some significant mounting or support hardware change was made.  
Electronically, they were identical, but there were different 
mechanical components, which made them non-interchangable at the 
system level.  Many components/sub-assemblies were the same, but not 
everything.
