I hear ya.

I look at all of the old surplus radio manuals and think to myself that
some of the
postwar conversions were pretty neat. THAT'S where chopped up rigs come in
handy.

I just recently got hold of an MD-7 modulator for the SCR-274N rigs that's
way too
far gone for resonable restoration to stock... but the modulation
transformer is
still there. That hacked up, connector stripped chassis is a good basis to
start on
building a more reasonable modulator for ARC-5 rigs (one that includes a
shunt
reactor and a speech amp stage that will work with dynamic mikes). There's
even a
space for a 12 VDC, non stock dynamotor to be mounted (600 VDC @ 225 MADC)
to power
the modulator and an RF deck attached to it.

Likewise... I've been sitting on a 2.1 - 3.0 MHz Command transmitter, also
somewhat
cut up. That's the RF stage for my 160 Command Set mobile rig.

I normally grab hacked up surplus rigs for parts value in restoring other
radios...
but the orphans themselves often can and do become useful again, as a basis
for
new construction.
