For the sake of the event, because it was a commemoration and
we were going to have vets there, I went through each radio and
replaced bad componants with good originals I salvaged from
hacked-up sets. I had them running on the original dynos-
even the tubes in the receivers are all "US ARMY" marked.
At any other time, I'd run the receivers on 24 VDC,
but I wanted the vets and the club members to hear
that nice dyno-whine.

The only real "fudges" were the desk mike for the SCR-287
(which isn't really a "fudge," since BC-375s in ground to air use
were common)
and the keys weren't correct;
believe it or not, I don't own a J-37
and there wasn't time to find one before the event.
Also, as a matter of practicality,
we used the 274N for CW and the 287 for phone,
exactly the opposite of their primary roles.
No one seemed to mind. I ended-up setting the PE-73
down in the grass to muffle the noise it makes.

(They picked the two very worst photos of me, of course.
Ed: I do have more hair left than that photo would indicate,
but not near as much as you remember. I've raised a teenage
girl since then, with three more behind her, so that's what happened
to my hair. I've also lost about 40 lbs since those photos were taken.
Mike: I grew the beard because I got tired of looking like the
Pillsbury Dough Boy. Kay talked me into cutting it off,
at least until it gets cold again.)
