I'm sitting here trying to recall what the value of those caps were
in magnetos. If you have some way to spin the mag, try values in the
range of 0.1 to 0.5 Mfd, and see if you can observe which has a
hotter spark. I don't recall it being smaller than 0.1, and anything
bigger than 0.5 in those days would have been too large to physically
fit. IIRC, that one is maybe 3/4 or 7/8" dia., and 1&1/2" long,
metal case. Given the advances in capacitor technology in 60+ years,
a good 600 volt modern electronics capacitor is likely a better
replacement than the original automotive part.
BTW, a scope with a HV probe ACROSS THE CAP, not the HV will give the
answers. Needs to be a fast scope with transient capture, though.
Either that or you really have to spin that mag fast!
