As some have said, bleach will kill it immediately but I would be worried
aboutdoing more damage by liqufying it and then staining the paper more
thoroughly.
Mold/mildew cannot survice in a low-humidity environment. Fan the book out
and put it in the sun. Fan the pages a bit and repeat. Sometimes the mold
will disappear on it's on, or will change color to a much less noticeable
white color.
Beyond that I'd do some searching on the internet for book restoration.
There are some VERY knowledgeable people out there. People who do this stuff
professionally or as a serious hobby. I'm sure you will find what the
professionals do to take care of it on the web somewhere. I found some great
information on fixing a books binding or having it re-bound which is not as
expensive as you might think.
Anyway if you find out anything good, come back and share it with us. I'm
