I have had good luck visiting old motor repair shops which have not
yet computerized their inventory and having them bring out various
brushes of about the right size. Secondary brushes will be difficult
to match because of their relatively small cross section, but primary
brushes can usually be matched to universal motors of some ilk.
AFIK, the fit criteria is that they do not jam in the holder at
maximum temperature.
Over the years, I've filed a lot to fit. And, I use the original
springs if available. I can't imagine how one would end up with a
dyno with empty brush holders. Well, come to reconsider, these days,
yes I could.
