One difference -- the "D" has ferrite beads on the tube socket leads to keep 
tubes from going into oscillation under test, or so the manual says.  I have 
a D and the beads are there.  The mil manual covers all the variants with a 
chart indicating the differences.  If you don't have it, I'm pretty sure 
it's on the bama site.
