Owning a TBW and having operated it now for some months on air for many
weekends have to say that the TBW when set up and operating properly
will outperform any of the modern "rice box" rigs in producing quality
AM, just as well as the TCS that I use to operate before the TBW. Almost
all modern SSB radios rely on modulation of the ALC to produce a poor
quality AM , and I feel that there is no replacement for plate or screen
modulation in terms of audio quality, except PDM and that's not normally
found in ham transmitters. My TBW benefits from a modern power supply
and several additional easily reversible modifications but I will
challenge anyone to produce better sounding audio with an ALC modulated
radio. As a foot note to this I also feel the military AM radios have a
narrower audio pasband that also produces good communications response,
am now in the process of getting the 618S1 in operation for the 80/40 AM
stuff.
