John, et al,
Whomever told you that "-V or "(V)" meant all models of a set was
demonstrably mistaken. The suffix meaning all letter suffix/models is "-(*)" for Signal
Corps nomenclature and "(*)" for JETDS/JAN/AN. For confirmation, see the
first or second text page of just about any TM 11 dated from circa 1943 through at
least1980 covering at least two letter models where it will be defined. So
far as I can recall, prior to finally converting to the Joint nomenclature, the
Navy ignored the question.
The suffix meaning various or variable configurations is "(V)". Variable
configuration means supplied with some but not necessarily all of the components
covered by a Radio Set nomenclature. In this sense (the (V) syntax was not in
use at the time), AN/GRC-9(V) would have covered all of AN/GRC-9, AN/GRC-9X,
AN/GRC-9Y, AN/GRC-87 and AN/VRC-34 and the French QR-TA-1A.
SINCGARS-V ends in "-V", not "(V)". However, DOD and the War Department
before them are well known for violating their own nomenclature rules (SCR-211
being a good/bad example) so maybe some GS -1 dumas made a typo and it stuck.
