Your conversion sounds like a variation on what I did, though my path was a bit
more lazy.  One 1000Kc oscillator and an 85 Kc IF strip between the first IF
can and the last with the oscillator for down and up conversion.  Jammed it all
inside the BC-348 where the dynamotor used to be.  I used an outside power
supply (rewired the rear connector for that duty) so there was lots of room.

Mine wasn't as elegant, to be sure, but it did the job which was all that was
necessary.
