That one is pretty much common knowledge, really.

It seems to be a function of the condition of the carbon mike
used with the rig; with no speech amplifier stage used, a bad
mike (and a LOT of carbon mikes, even when they're new, aren't
that great) can have a dramatic effect on mod percentage.

That's the Achilles Heel of the TCS transmitter.
