Terry,

The R-808 is part of the AN/GRC-14 radio system, (two R-808/GRC-14, with the
T-631/GRC-14 100 W AM/CW/RTTY transmitter, PP-1171 power supply and various
accessories), manufactured by Federal Telephone and Radio (predecessor of
ITT) for the Marine Corps.
The R-808/GRC-14 receiver is a traditional double-conversion receiver as
opposed to the R-392 which uses the Collins conversion system where the
first IF is variable and the second is fixed.
Both receivers use 24 VDC on both filaments and plates. The R-808 has an
internal 115 VAC to 24 VDC power supply, giving it an option to be powered
up directly from 115 VAC.
The R-808 also contains an RTTY demodulator/loop driver. In contrast, the
AN/GRC-19 system, where the R-392 is used (the transmitter is the T-195)
there is a separate RTTY demodulator in the system, as well as an RTTY
keyer.
In the GRC-14 system, the T-631 transmitter has a built-in RTTY keyer.

Although the R-808 receiver is an interesting receiver, it's not a good a
performer as the R-392.

The R-808 RF section is a plug-in subassembly and it's important that the
connections are clean and tight, otherwise the receiver will not function
properly.

I have two R-808's with the GRC-14 setup in the shack.
