Digressive anecdote time: I recall in the mid 1980s crawling in
the crawl space above the Zinn's garage in Seattle, where there
seemed to be dozens of ARN-5s, maybe left over from his days
running the surplus store in West Seattle. In the basement of
the house were tons of new boxed Navy spare parts kits. Also
several new crated MN-26s. Part of a control panel from the
cockpit of a B-17. But- i could only get over there by
infrequent invitation, and those eventually declined to zero.
I still wonder where all that stuff went. I never heard of a
ripple on any of Seattle's second hand, etc. usual haunts.

And my comment to that is to agree, that everyone has stories about disappearing masses of equipment in similar circumstances. There must be a secret society of surplus dealers who eventually ship the stuff to third world countries. Does anyone know how the big dealers managed to latch on to the large quantities of equipment in the first place? Who bankrolled them, as to a man, they all pleaded poverty. And how did they get notified to bid? Or was it all under the counter and hence marginally legal, or profoundly illegal? The FBI sent a couple of surplus dealers away here back in the 80s for such shenanigans, but it was only the tip of the iceberg.
