I was in the Azores in November of 1956. At the time I was 11 and coming to
the USA as a refugee from Hungary. We spent about a half a day it seems on
the island. I am not sure why we landed there as the flight started in
Austria and then from there we went to Shannon, Ireland and then to the
Azores. After that to Newfoundland as one of the engines caught on fire. It
was a US cargo type plane with seats. Anyway, the thing I, as a kid at the
time, remember the most about the Azores, was the wind and the dust/sand. 73

Back when I was a youngster in USAF (1956-age 19) I
was a transmitter supervisor at a major relay station
in the Azores.
Used to spend the midwatches as a SWL and used to hear
quite a few of the coast stations, especially in
Europe, using the QSX 4/6/8, etc MHZ being sent on
their "wheel" so it was rather common in the mid-50's
anyway.
