But that was/is almost always incorrectly used.  People really mean "Megacycles per second" instead.

There's no really no such unit called a "cycle" in any system of units, old or new.  The actual unit of frequency as written in actual calculations is "1/second" or just "per second" or, finally, "1 Hz."  The "per second" part is far more important than the "cycle" part, yet that's the part omitted most often when people make use of "cycle" terminology.
