     I'm sure we all recall the time the Russian MIG landed in Japan back in the 80's, flown by a defecting North Korean pilot.  "We" (the West) did a quick reverse-engineering of the thing and ridiculed its avionics which were based on vacuum tube technology.  That is, until someone took a look deeper into the bowels of the airframe and found solid state components in there.

     Our boys later concluded that the Ruskies were crafty indeed, using the more robust hollow state components near the exterior of the craft where EMP was more likely to be stronger, saving the expensive and more delicate SS technology for the protected interior.
