You can not blame too harshly about that - the receivers were not
designed with 50 year life spans. When they were produced, I bet the split
section metal casting were just fine.

The design flaw was inadequate cooling of the tubes, and some of
those modules tortured the tubes with excessive heat.

Those submini tube are quite amazing. They found that when properly used,
the tubes were more reliable than the sockets - thus the direct soldered
leads. In most applications, the tubes NEVER died. The RCA /SRR receivers
were an exception.
