I don't have any technical info, except for some usage remarks that I recall from my days (30 years ago) in the US submarine force.  

The AN/WLR-6 was a large console that mounted a number of smaller receiver modules.  The system was used for signals intelligence collection by US fast attack submarines (and may other vessels) during cold war special operations.  The modules installed at any one time would be customized to the specific requirements of the mission.

These sets are about 40 years old, and some were still in use in the early 1980s.  They were not part of the submarine's normal communications gear like the AN/WRR-3 and AN/BRR-3 which were operated by radioman ratings (a rating that no longer exists in the USN).  The AN/WLR-6 was operated by the communication techs ("spooks") on board just for the mission.

I'm surprised that more of the AN/WLR-6 hasn't shown up surplus.  Just about every vessel that carried it has been scrapped.

As I recall, the tech manual for the AN/WLR-6 was rather large.
