I collect training documentation on WWII Aircraft Radio issues.
In the training documents it says the, should you be unable
to contact a Civil Aviation Authority air traffic center,
you should switch to MCW (A2) and use the key to raise them.
I also think this was due to the difficulty of getting everyone
on frequency within a couple of KC, which you'd need if you
were going to use A1.
